High energy X-rays or gamma rays are used to excite the sample, resulting in the emission of characteristic secondary or fluorescent X-rays from the sample, telling the qualitative and quantitative information of the sample. P 10 Methane Gas mixture is used in the detectors. A typical XRF spectrometer has X-ray source, sample chamber, analysing crystal, detector and signal processing computer etc. Because the secondary radiation produces such weak photons, the tubes that involve radiation transport must be kept in a vacuum. After the secondary radiation occurs, the fluorescence is channelled into a solid state detector, like a crystal, that is able to produce a steady beam of photons for further detection. Specific wavelengths will come off the crystal at specific angles, which allows for isolated detection. This technique is called wavelength dispersive spectroscopy. Detectors used for wavelength dispersive spectrometry need to have high pulse processing speeds in order to cope with the very high photon count rates that can be obtained. Furthermore, they need sufficient energy resolution to allow filtering-out of background noise and spurious photons from the primary beam or from crystal fluorescence. Detectors contain their own, specific atoms. The secondary radiation will ionize these atoms contained in the detectors producing a charge. The charge is proportional to the incoming photons energy. Next the charge is collected and the process starts over for the next photon. Two very common types of detectors are used to measure the intensity of the secondary radiation. They are gas flow proportional detector and scintillation detector. Gas flow proportional detectors are normally used to detect longer wavelength. They are filled with gas, typically a gas mixture of 90% argon & 10% methane (called as “P 10”). The argon is ionised by incoming X-ray photons, and the electric field multiplies this charge into a measurable pulse. The methane is to suppress the formation of fluorescent photons caused by recombination of the argon ions with stray electrons. When very long wavelengths (over 5 nm) are to be detected, the argon may be replaced with neon or helium. Scintillation detectors analyze shorter wavelengths (K spectra from Niob (41) – Iod (53) and L spectra from Thorium (90) – Uran (92)). An embedded crystal produces scintillations that are proportional to the energy of the photon absorbed. This pulse is translated into a voltage proportional to the original photon. The purity of the P 10 is very important for the accurate analysis results and the lifetime of the instrument. The contaminations in the gas can cause peak tailing of the fluorescence spectrum, thus reduced instrument sensitivity and unstable results. HiQ 10% methane, balance argon promises a good gas purity and BASELINE C 106 regulator is recommended to maintain the gas integrity.

Role of nitrogen It is relatively easy to excite a nitrogen (N2) molecule to its fi rst vibrational energy level via an electric fi eld or discharge. This fi rst energy level of nitrogen has almost the same energy content as the upper level of CO2. (see Fig. 2). Transfer of vibrational energy from N2 to CO2 is achieved through collision between the two molecules. Thus it is easier to excite the upper laser level of CO2 by introducing nitrogen. Adding nitrogen to CO2 results in higher laser power. Role of helium The primary role of helium is to help CO2 to relax, i.e. to move from the lower to the lowest energy level and re-enter excitation process. Helium atoms collide with CO2 molecules and vibrational energy is transferred from CO2 molecules to the helium atoms. As a result, higher laser powers can be obtained. Helium also helps to conduct heat away from the electric fi eld or the electric discharge (it has the highest heat-conduction coeffi cient of all gases). This is essential for slow-fl ow CO2 lasers, where excess heat must be conducted to the walls of the discharge tube. For fast-fl ow CO2 lasers, helium gives a more stable electric discharge and supports the excitation effi ciency. Laser gas composition CO2 laser gas mixtures almost always contain helium, nitrogen and CO2 as basic components. Some lasers may also require small additions of CO, O2, H2 and/or Xe, which trigger the chemical process in the resonator. CO and O2 counteract the decomposition (dissociation) of CO2, allowing higher output powers. Hydrogen has a similar effect and can contribute to a more uniform electric discharge in the resonator. Output power and effi ciency can also be improved by the addition of Xe. This has the lowest ionisation potential and largest ionisation cross-section, thus becoming the primary source of ions in the discharge. Laser gases can be delivered in separate cylinders, or pre-mixed in a single cylinder. Laser gases for excimer lasers Excimer lasers are also multi-gas lasers. There are several spectral lines (wavelengths) that can be generated depending on the type of rare gas/halogen combination in the laser gas mixture. In the excited state these form a metastable compound called “excimer” (excited dimer). As this compound disintegrates, it emits UV radiation. Krypton-fl uorine (Kr-F) lasers are typical examples of this type of laser, generating laser radiation at 248nm. Another type is the xenon-chlorine (XeCl) laser, emitting radiation at 308nm. Rare gases are usually argon, krypton or xenon, buffer gases, helium or neon, and fl uorine or chlorine representing the halogen. Fluorine and chlorine are toxic and highly corrosive (especially when in contact with moisture) and require special processes and procedures for the gas supply system and when handling waste laser gas (see Fig. 3). Excimer lasers are generally supplied with custom-blended pre-mixtures where the halogen component is diluted to below 10%
